To briefly explain: 1.1 uses the control stick to both move and shoot with some auto-aim + use of the aim button. In GoldenEye, I personally use the 1.2 control scheme and it works great. 2) Most players have been playing dual-stick shooters for almost 20 years now since Halo came out, and they're used to only one control scheme and are incapable of switching to anything else. The issue is twofold: 1) a lot of people just stick with the default control scheme, but GoldenEye offers like 7-8 or more control schemes to choose from including some that can use 2 controllers. GoldenEye's controls are actually remarkably solid IMO. It's a somewhat early 3D game, it came out in the first year of the N64 which was the first console to try and push real 3D. I don't think anybody can argue this, the game has a lot of jank. The levels changed their objectives depending on what difficulty you selected, there was a large number of weapons and environments, the multiplayer was fleshed out with a large number of options, and while we hate the tank controls today, the average person in 1997 probably wasn't yet ready for dual analog, so the tank controls made it playable. It was enormously ambitious given its low budget and Rare's lack of experience, and remarkably successful at its ambitions. People respect Goldeneye for being the first decent console shooter and its popularity helped elevate the genre from being an enthusiast option on PC to being a dominant, mainstream genre that would subsequent aid with the popularity of Medal of Honor, Halo, Call of Duty, etc. I don't think people still consider it a great game by modern standards, people are more than willing to recognize that it's technically janky, has awful controls, practically no story, terrible escort missions, inferior graphics to PC FPS titles that had been around for years, etc. † Personally I would pick Turok, however. I get that an argument could be made that it was the best FPS on N64† – but that's kind of like arguing that Croc: Legend of the Gobbos (PS1) or some random PC platformer deserves a spot near the top alongside Mario 64 in the best 3D platformer category. In my mind, it wasn't even that good of an FPS by late 90s standards.

So when I see GoldenEye near the top of yet another TOP 10 or TOP whatever, I'm just confused, that's all. I'd argue it didn't exactly get better with age either. To me, GoldenEye was both bland and clunky, even back when I first played it in '99 (not to mention N64 controls and the horrendous frame rate drops). and soon would be moving to Q3 Arena, Unreal Tournament and, of course CS. Meanwhile we were playing Half-Life and Quake 2. I distinctly remember visiting USA in 1999, and seeing first hand what a hit GoldenEye was. Where I grew up PC was king in the late 90s. Not looking to stir the pot. I just honestly don't understand why this game is often considered one of the best FPS games of all time – and I hope the eloquent folks here at truegaming can help me figure it out.Īdmittedly, N64 was never as big of a deal in Europe as it was in the States. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gamingĮDIT: Genuinely want to thank everyone for contributing, I definitely feel like I now have a much better understanding of this topic (basically reddit at its best). r/nintendo - Nintendo-specific subreddit for general Nintendo news and discussion R/shouldibuythisgame - Find out what's worth getting.
